Parc National des Volcans

In the heart of Central Africa great old volcanoes tower up almost 15,000 feet. They are nearly covered with rich, green rainforest. Here it is "so high up that you shiver more than you sweat" according to the eminent primatologist Dian Fossey.

Situated in the far northwest of Rwanda, the Parc des Volcans, home to the volcanoes, protects the steep slopes the Virungas, a magnificent mountain range, and is home to the rare mountain gorilla. There is a rich mosaic of ecosystems, which embrace evergreen and bamboo forest, open grassland, swamp and heath.

An exhilarating trek through the cultivated foothills of the Virungas with experienced trackers offers stirring views in all directions. Then, abruptly, the trail enters the national park, immersing trekkers in the mysterious intimacy of the rainforest, alive with the calls of colourful birds and the chattering of the rare golden monkey. The park is littered with fresh spoor of the mountains’ elusive populations of buffalo and elephant. Through gaps in the forest canopy, the magnificent peaks are glimpsed. They are easily accessible and among the highest in Africa.

Accommodation in Rwanda varies with a couple of options available. Sabyinyo Silverback Lodge offers the utmost in luxury and is in close proximity to the gorilla park. Volcanoes Virunga Lodge, situated in one of the most stunning locations in the whole of Africa provides an eco-friendly option. Both lodges are perched on the hillside boasting breathtaking views of the Virunga Volcanoes and Lakes Ruhondo and Bulera.
